The City of Beacon marks the spot where the Fishkill Creek flows into the Hudson River. It is a city with a very interesting history. The rivers, creeks, and mountains of Beacon, and the surrounding area, were one of their favorite hunting grounds of the Wappingers Indians. The streams feeding into the Hudson were used for fishing and called "matteawan". The highlands had an abundant supply of beaver and were called "waranoaks" or "place of fur".
Fishkill Creek offered fast running water to run machinery and many factories and mills were built along its banks. Beacon was a thriving city with oil mills, clay mills, cooperages, tanneries, a hat factory, leather belting manufacturing, shoe factories, soap and candle makers, and breweries.
In the 1900's things started to decline. The rail road transfer was removed from Beacon and the hat industry shrunk and silk mills closed. The negative financial impact was devastating.
However, a new error has arrived and Beacon is starting to see a significant upturn in its economy. The recovery of Dutchess County real estate in Beacon is mostly due to an influx of new homeowners from the towns and cities south of Beacon, and a concerted effort by the City fathers to bring Beacon back to a thriving Dutchess County community.
