East Fishkill New York is a rapidly growing residential home community in the lower Dutchess County real estate market. The Township of East Fishkill includes the towns of Hopewell Junction, Stormville, Fishkill Plains, and Wiccopee. The town´s first settlement was in Hopewell Junction, around the Dutch Reformed church on the corner of Beekman and Clove Branch Road. The original church was made of wood and eventually replaced by a new one built of brick and masonry. It´s still in use today.
Hopewell Junction has been the center of commerce for East Fishkill. So much of the East Fishkill community life centers around Hopewell Junction, many visitors refer to Hopewell Junction, as the township, instead of East Fishkill. Fishkill Plains is starting to compete, with many new stores and restaurants.
Early settlers built their homes along a road know as Madam Brett´s Highway. It was a dirt road that ran between Connecticut and Fishkill Landing in Beacon. This road was used extensively during the Civil War to move troops and supplies from Boston to the Hudson River. It eventually became know as the Continental Highway. Beekman Roadwas a segment of Madam Brett´s Highway.
At one time East Fishkill was a part of Fishkill and Hopewell Junction was known as Hopewell. In 1849 East Fishkill received its own charter and separated from Fishkill. A few years later, in 1875, the Newburgh, Dutchess, and Connecticut Rail Road began operations and passed through Hopewell. Tracks ran through the town in both a north and south and east and west direction. Hopewell then became know as Hopewell Junction.
The popularity of the Dutchess County Real Estate market in East Fishkill is primarily due to its proximity to White Plains and New York City, an
exceptional highway system, good schools, and an abundance of middle and upper income homes. It takes between 15 and 20 minutes to reach the Beacon, New Hamburg, or Brewster train stations from any point in East Fishkill. Commuting to Lower Manhattan by train or by car takes approximately 1½ hours.
The first significant population increase occurred in the early 1960´s, when IBM began its high tech computer operations in the lower section of Hopewell Junction, between County Route 52 and Interstate 84. IBM employed thousands of people and they needed a place to live. The demand for homes grew exponentially. The growth continues today, with numerous new home communities appearing every year.
Two active upscale new single family home communities in East Fishkill are The Legends, off Beekman Road; and Four Corners, off Phillips Road. Both are very popular, as they provide a privileged life style for professional people from this area and the lower Hudson Valley. The Legends is noted for it's modern contemporary homes. Four Corners has a mixture of contemporary homes and two story colonials.
