The Town of Pawling is one of the gems of Dutchess County. While most of the county has been growing at an exponential rate, Pawling has remained rather stable. This is due to two limiting factors – the Great Swamp, and the mountains in the eastern and western sections of the township.
The Great Swamp is an environmental resource running parallel to route 22, and through the center of Pawling. It is a large protected area that filters out sediment and pollution from our drinking water. It is critically important to providing a reliable source of water to Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester Counties; as well as New York City.
The hilly lands east of route 22 were originally settled by Quakers from England; and are know as Quaker Hill. Today they are occupied, almost exclusively, by large prestigious horse farms, and opulent millionaire estates. Most of the Quaker Hill homes were built with little regard to cost; and reflect the epitome of quality for gracious living. If you want a vibrant life style in a world class residence, this is where you search for your year round residence or summer home.
Since the western portion of Pawling is also mountainous; the majority of the Pawling residents live in the valley. The valley contains an abundance of parks and recreational facilities for year round enjoyment. There’s also the Appalachian Trail, community theatre, historic sites, and the Dutcher Golf Course, the oldest 9 hole golf course in the United States.
If your a commuter, Pawling is also served by the Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem line. Metro North provides four early morning trains, from Pauling to Grand Central Terminal. The earliest arrival is at 7:10AM. The latest of the four is at 8:53AM. There are other departures throughout the day.
