When speaking of Poughkeepsie, it’s important to know whether you are referring to the town or city. The City of Poughkeepsie is located on the Hudson River, halfway between Albany and New York City. The Town of Poughkeepsie encompasses a very large area to the west and south of the city.
Much of the Town of Poughkeepsie has older middle class communities. Poughkeepsie is a popular commuter location. Many local residents travel to work in New York City by catching the train in the Cities of Poughkeepsie and Beacon. Most areas of Poughkeepsie are conveniently located within 15 minutes of the train station, and a half hour to 45 minute drive to Stuart Airport.
