Wappinger Falls is an area steeped in rich history. It’s named after the Wabunacki Indians and the water fall in the center of the Village of Wappinger. The water fall is created by the Wahamanessing, or Wappingers creek. The creek passes through the center of the town and empties into the Hudson River near the Town of New Hamburg.
Early settlers used the Hudson River to travel between New York City and Albany. They made numerous stops along the way and had their first encounters with the Indians at the mouth of the Wappingers Creek.
French traders were the first ones to visit the area. The French seemed to be more interested in trapping for furs than establishing permanent settlements. They were followed by the Dutch and English. Adolphus and Nicholas Brewer were early settlers. Before the Revolutionary War, they built and operated two prosperous mills below the mouth of the falls. One mill was used to produce flour; the other was a saw mill.
The Village of Wappinger Falls is rather quaint and conservative. Many of the homes in the Village are a showcase of early American History. They were erected for the people who worked in the local factories that spanned the Wappingers Creek. They all contribute to the splendor of the Dutchess County real estate market.
During colonial times, the Wappingers Creek supplied power to many factories. With the discovery of electricity and the electric motor, water power was no longer essential for manufacturing; but during the early history of our nation, the Wappingers Creek was an important part of the economic vibrancy of the area.
You can’t pass through the Village of Wappinger Falls, without crossing the stone and masonry bridge that spans the Wappingers creek. On the Western side of the bridge, is a small unobtrusive theatre.
The theatre is proof that good things come in small package. Every year a group of amateur actors use the theatre to produce one or more spectacular productions. Many of their presentations would rival any Broadway show.
Wappinger Falls is also home to Bowdin Park, a popular recreational area along the Hudson River. The Town of Wappingers Falls and the Dutchess County Legislature recently joined forces to build an outdoor concert pavilion in the park. It was an instant hit with the residents of Dutchess County. It takes a while to exit the parking lot after a concert; but no one seems to care.
The Town and Village of Wappinger Falls host to a number of fine restaurants. If you crave Italian Cuisine, there’s Longobardi’s, Romanellis, Antonella’s and IlContinori. Greenbaum & Gilhooleys will not be outdone with its Irish American cuisine; and for breakfast, who can pass up Perkins.
With the Galleria Mall and other shopping centers only minutes away, a great school system, closeness to major highways and the New Hamburg Train Stations, plus Stuart Airport in Newburgh, Wappingers Falls is a convenient and great place to live and raise a family.
